Our late founding pastor, Elder James R. Purdom, Jr was ordained by the late Bishop B.J. Crouch. He founded Rock of the Valley Church of God in Christ in September of 1995. Rock of the Valley first began meeting in a small hotel conference room on Sundays. Prayer and Bible Band was held at the home of the pastor. Due to immediate growth, and blessings from the Lord, the church had to locate and acquire adequate space in a school auditorium and two classrooms within three months of it’s opening. Bible study, and choir rehearsals were held in an adjacent public park facility.
With an intense desire to have a building where services could be held as scheduled, the church body began to fast and pray and searched for suitable space. The Lord led the congregation to it’s present location where God told the pastor to minister to the needs of many people.
Rock of the Valley is a ‘mission’ minded church, with various Mission outreaches. The church currently has a large mission department with a food bank that services the community on a weekly basis, and provides clothing to those in need, members and non-members. During Christmas, Rock of the Valley supports the Angel Tree program which ministers to the children of those incarcerated. There is also a functioning Juvenile hall ministry as well as a Convalescent ministry.
Rock of the Valley is a fully functional church. The Lord is strengthening the Children’s and Youth ministries, which include the Sunshine Band, as well as Purity Class. The Women’s department has both a Christian Women’s Council and a Young Women’s Christian Council.
Rock of the Valley has two worship services on Sundays, morning and evening, as well as an active Sunday School. During the week, there is Prayer and Bible Band, Bible Study, and a Mid-week evening service. Much of the growth of the church is due to the intercessory prayer on Fridays at noon.
Rock of the Valley is part of The Greater Love District of the Church of God in Christ. Bishop J. B. Hackworth, of the Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction is pastor Cathy H.Purdom’s pastor.
